A Centralized Approach for Directing Autonomous Vehicles Through an Intersection
The increased popularity and development of autonomous vehicles (AV) requires new ideas and considerations for how these vehicles will interact with current traffic infrastructure. The purpose of this experiment is to analyze a proposed method for pre-planned maneuvers through an intersection; each AV requests entry permission and then receives a safe plan of entry into and through an intersection. This centralized intersection management system for autonomous vehicles was designed, simulated and analyzed for efficiency and safety. The results show that pre-planned driving maneuvers decrease the risk of accidents and reduce the amount of fuel needed to pass through intersections. The ability for AV to be helpful to our society is trivial, however, incorporating them fluidly into our lives will require unique solutions.
