At the Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science, learning goes beyond classroom. Our students gain hands-on experience, sharpen skills that directly apply to their careers, and learn from industry leaders. One such leader is Dr. J. Morgan Nicholson, a Systems Engineering adjunct faculty member at the Ritchie School, whose journey is both inspiring and impressive. 

Dr. Morgan was born and raised in Kodiak, Alaska. He worked as a commercial salmon fisherman during high school and college while pursuing his engineering degree. He has extensive academic and industry experience in systems engineering

He is the co-founder and CEO of InTrack Radar Technologies, an aerospace and defense tech startup located in Colorado Springs, CO. Additionally, he serves as an officer in the US Air Force Reserve, currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Systems Engineering at the Air Force Academy . 

With over 20 years of experience in Systems Engineering within the Space and Missile Defense industries, Dr. Morgan brings a blend of academic knowledge and real-world expertise to the classroom. He has led projects to completion, managed systems engineering organizations, and mentored numerous junior engineers throughout his career. 

Furthermore, he is an adjunct professor at both the University of Denver (DU) and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS), sharing his insights across multiple institutions. 

Dr. Morgan’s academic credentials are just as extensive as his professional experiences. He earned his: 

  • PhD in Systems Engineering from the University of Alabama, Huntsville 
  • MBA from the University of Kansas, 
  • ME in Systems Engineering from UCCS 
  • ME in Engineering Management from UCCS, and 
  • BS in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. 

He is also a licensed professional engineer in the state of Colorado, an INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP), and an OCSMP Certified Model Builder, Advanced. His research interests include theory of systems engineering, design optimization, agile systems engineering, engineering leadership, and organizational design.
