DU-STEM

Purpose

University of Denver’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (DU-STEM) is four year academic success program serving undergraduate students from various backgrounds and experiences who elect to major in the STEM fields. 

The DU-STEM program is focused on developing a strong, welcoming STEM community that developing self-confidence, creates a sense of belonging and fosters an atmosphere of academic success among DU-STEM scholars at DU. Through education navigating the STEM fields, along with weekly success sessions, peer mentorship, intensive advising, guidance, and support, DU-STEM helps provide the tools necessary to excel academically and thrive professionally in STEM.

Why DU STEM?

DU-STEM is a vibrant community of STEM scholars dedicated to academic success and community collaboration at the University of Denver. DU-STEM Scholars are dedicated to each other’s success as well as their own. The DU-STEM community also is motivated to solving future problems in the world through science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and collaboration. Each scholar brings a unique set of experiences, talents and skills coupled with their STEM interests, that will enhance any team dedicated to success!

Program Goals

The DU-STEM program brings together a unified cohort of students from different STEM majors (Scholars) with three main goals: 

  1. Boost Scholars’ academic success and sense of belonging in the field of STEM. 
  2. Maximize retention of Scholars in their STEM majors, through graduation. 
  3. Increase the number of Scholars who go on to graduate-level STEM studies and pursue careers in STEM. 

All are welcome to participate.

Components

DU-STEM Summer Bride

  • Summer Bridge Pre-Orientation

    Students participate in a pre-collegiate summer orientation, DU-STEM Summer Bridge, held prior to the University of Denver’s Discoveries Orientation. During the Summer Bridge experience, DU-STEM scholars connect with other incoming students, peer mentors, STEM faculty, and graduate students. They participate in activities and workshops designed to help them transition from high school to college life. By moving into their housing assignments early, students have time to explore and learn to navigate campus and visit downtown Denver. 

  • DU-STEM Success Sessions

    These weekly 1 ½ hour sessions during the academic year navigate incoming scholars through DU by providing academic success strategies and resources, professional development, networking and conversations about navigating DU and the STEM fields while encouraging students to develop their STEM professional identity and pursue their aspirations. Monthly All Community Dinners bring all scholars together for lively conversation, community building and continued professional development featuring various speakers and STEM topics.  

  • Course Clustering

    Calculus 1, 2, and 3 - To further help DU-STEM Scholars to be academically successful, scholars are required to all take the same Calculus I, II and III courses with the same instructor and graduate teaching assistant in the same quarter with the rest of the cohort if they are ready for the Calculus course. The benefits of course clustering are: 

    • Deeper Connections: Helps students link related concepts and see how different topics fit together in the real world. 
    • Less Repetition: Cuts out repeating the same assignments or tests for similar learning goals. 
    • Stronger Community: Builds peer support and collaboration when the same group of students takes classes together.
