From 1977 to 1990, Dr. Whitman worked for the IBM Corporation where he completed assignments in test and manufacturing engineering, the development laboratory and new products administration. Beginning in 1990, he was the Deputy Director of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) located in Boulder, CO. At AISES, Dr. Whitman managed budgets and personnel for a 22-person non-profit organization. During the summer of 1993, Dr. Whitman joined the technical staff of the AT&T Bell Laboratory. While there he developed a Navajo language text-to-speech synthesizer using AT&T proprietary software. While at AT&T he also participated in the University relations program. From 1993 through 1994, Dr. Whitman tutored students in Electrical Engineering courses at the University of Colorado in their Minority Engineering Program (MEP). In 1996, he joined the University of New Mexico’s Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering as an Assistant Professor, a position he held until 1998. Dr. Whitman joined the University of Denver in 1998. During his time here he has held various positions including Assistant Professor, Associate Chair, and his current position of Senior Lecturer.
