Interim Dean Announced for the Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science
The Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science was fortunate to have JB Holston as Dean for the last five years and we’re grateful for the leadership that he provided. We wish him all the best luck in his next venture with The Greater Washington Partnership. We are excited to announce that Professor, Senior Associate Dean, and interim chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Haluk Ogmen, PhD, has been named as the interim dean for the Ritchie School!
Ogmen joined the University of Denver in 2016 as the Senior Associate Dean and a full-time professor in ECE. Ogmen received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Université Laval in Quebec and previously worked at the University of Houston for 28 years. His research interests include: neuro-engineering, vision, visual psychophysics, visual memory, attention, and computational neuroscience.
During his time as Senior Associate Dean he was instrumental in developing the Ritchie School’s strategic plan. Ogmen has assisted with faculty searches over the last four years and helped to ensure that the School hired not only the best candidates, but those that would provide the greatest support to our students. In additional to working closely with faculty, he has collaborated with the School to modernize the undergraduate experience as mentioned in the strategic plan. Ogmen helped establish the Grand Challenge Scholars Program and worked to increase efforts around entrepreneurship and innovation. He was also awarded the Dean’s Award this past spring, in honor of the many contributions to the School he’s made.
“I am grateful to RSECS faculty and staff for their dedication and hard work, during these challenging times, to provide the best possible learning environment for our students." Ogmen stated after the announcement of his new position.
The coronavirus pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for this academic year and in higher education, however Ogmen has worked tirelessly with the Ritchie School leadership to produce a plan for the Fall quarter. While the University has worked to create a strong plan for the whole campus, there are several factors specific to Ritchie that must be considered. Ogmen has focused his current efforts on guaranteeing that our community will be able to return to the buildings and remain safe while in classes, labs, and onsite studying.
Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies Breigh Roszelle, PhD, said, "Dr. Ogmen is a kind and positive leader who knows the Ritchie School well, and will be a wonderful guide through the transition to our next Dean."
Ogmen’s leadership these last four years has already yielded remarkable improvements and changes at the Ritchie School. His care and dedication to the School are complimented by his many years of experience in academia as a researcher and educator. Ogmen will guide us through this time of transition and further our overall goals to ensure that we continue to pursue our mission and values.
We are thrilled to welcome Ogmen into the role of interim dean and are confident that he will continue to provide strong leadership and maintain the many initiatives important to the success of the School. Congratulations and thank you for taking on this additional role during these momentous times!
