In the Classroom: Truss Design Competition
Dr. Travis Hu & Brecca Gaffney teach the Statics with Lab class where they held the 4th annual Truss Design Competition. Students are tasked with designing a trust that minimizes overall “construction cost and structural cost” and fabricate this bridge in a competition setting in front of a panel of DU faculty judges. The truss must meet specified design constraints including bridge span, height, and capable of supporting a 2kg load. Groups are scored on the overall construction cost (number of builders, time for bridge fabrication), structural cost (weight, maximum force within a member), and any penalties determined by the judging panel. The cheapest bridge wins!
